Spring National Meeting Report

Clean sweep for OMS cars at Harewood

It was a clean sweep for North Yorkshire race car constructor OMS at Harewood Hillclimb on Sunday.  Trevor Willis took his 2.8 litre OMS CF06 race car to a first win of the season.  The Aylesbury driver, who won two British Championship rounds last year, set a best time of 57.06 in very difficult conditions following heavy rain in the morning and a slippery track in the afternoon.  OMS constructor Steve Owen secured second place with a best time of 59.15 in his 1.6 litre OMS Hornet race car, whilst Nottingham’s Dave Banner took third spot in his 1100cc OMS 2000m car. In fact the top nine places were all secure with OMS race cars.

Leeds based 2007 Harewood Champion Karl Jackson, stamped his mark on this years Harrogate Audi Harewood Championship in his powerful Mitsubishi EVO and took an early lead over Nottingham’s Dave Marshall in the Peugeot 205 GTi and Leeds driver Henry Moorhouse in the always sideways 1600cc Westfield.

The MG Cars group 1 class winner Michael Ashcroft, from Aintree, was separated by just 9 one hundredths of a second in his ZT from second placed man David Jones in the TF from Stratford on Avon, with Lincolnshire driver William Sharp in another TF under a second behind Ashcroft.  Another good driver was put in by Chris Wise in his ex-works Ford Escort running slick tyres for the first time with a 67.85 second run, beating many much more modern machines.  In the under 1100cc race car class competition between OMS divers Dave Banner and Bradley’s John Chacksfield was intense.  Chacksfield took the lead in the first run, but was beaten by Banner on the second run with a faster time.

The difficult conditions caught out a number of drivers, keeping the Harewood marshals busy.

The next Harewood events are on Saturday May 10th for the Harewood Open and on Sunday May 12th for the British Championship round.

2008 Championship Sponsor

HARROGATE AUDI TO SPONSOR
HAREWOOD SPEED HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP

Harrogate Audi, have announced that they are to sponsor the 2008 championship season of Britain’s longest speed hillclimb.

The British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) Yorkshire Centre has been racing at Harewood, near Leeds, for 46 years and stage ten week-end speed hillclimb events each summer season. The fully tarmacadam track is the longest permanent hillclimb track in mainland Britain at just under one mile (1448 metres).   Harewood Hillclimb is a popular motor sport venue attracting a wide range of competition cars.  The meetings on 11th May and 5/6th July form part of the British Motor Sports Association (MSA) Championships which attract competitors from all over the country.

Rob Scaife, Head of Business at Harrogate Audi said “We are delighted to support Harewood Speed Hillclimb in 2008.  This underlines Audi’s sporting heritage and our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy to become involved and help local communities and organisations.  We are keen on all motorsports and will be working closely with BARC Yorkshire to help increase awareness of both Harewood Hillclimb and our business.  We see our involvement as a great team-building opportunity for our dealership.”

“This support from Harrogate Audi is important to the Club”  commented Dale Cordingley of Harewood Speed Hillclimb  “It will help us to maintain and develop the venue and to keep Harewood in the top league of British speed hillclimbing. I am confident we will both benefit from the association.”

Harrogate Audi is based at St James Business Park in Knaresborough and
is part of the Sytner Group (a member of the Penske Automotive Group).  The company has great competitive roots in motorsport as Frank Synter, one of the founders of Synter Group, was the 1988 British Touring Car champion and Roger Penske, founder of Penske Automotive Group was a keen competitor in the US and now runs NASCAR and Indy Car racing teams amongst other business interests..

To compete in motorsport events you will need an MSA licence and be a member of a motor club. You can get membership from the BARC website at www.barc.net/membership/index.php.   You can enter almost any kind of car from a road going hatchback to a full blown racer, and cars are grouped into classes at each event. The club also run a driving school for beginners and those that wish to refresh their skills.

The first event of the Harewood season will be on Sunday 13th April at Stockton Farm, Harewood, Leeds.   Practice starts at 0900 hours with the first competitive run at approximately 12.30pm.

“We have competitors aged from 18 to 81 years old who compete regularly at Harewood” concluded Dale   “And it is not just a man's thing – some of our fastest competitors are women. Hillclimbing is a great day out with the opportunity to get really close to the cars. We would like to see more people coming to enjoy the day with us.”
