Mike Bushell became a two-time Renault UK Clio Cup champion after clinching the coveted crown at Silverstone this past weekend (September 16/17).
In what has been a season of dominance for the Team Pyro driver, Bushell took the title in the second race at the Northamptonshire circuit, putting himself out of touch with two races to run at Brands Hatch still.
With seven victories, five second place finishes and a single third place, the Tunbridge Wells racer has been in superlative form ever since the opening weekend of the 2017 campaign.
Arriving at Silverstone with a mathematical chance of sealing the title, Bushell battled atrocious weather conditions to take fifth and set himself up for the championship on Sunday, in front of a bumper crowd.
Starting from pole position, the Pyro racer launched himself into the lead but was soon past by now fellow two-time champion Paul Rivett.
A titanic eight-car fight for the lead ensued with Bushell managing to hang on to second place which was good enough to crown him champion, regardless of what his rivals do at Brands Hatch in two weeks time.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, of course,” Bushell said. “I won it in 2014 but this one perhaps means more because of how I have driven - I’ve only been off the podium three times in 16 races.
“I knew Paul would go for the move. I defended as I wanted the race win as well but no way was I going to do anything silly.
“It was tough as I was attacked him but having to defend as well for most of the race after that so when I crossed the line it was a mixture of elation and relief all at the same time.”
Bushell’s championship coronation will take place at the final event of the season on September 30/ October 1.
