The CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship continues to go from strength to strength, as Saturday’s entry for Oulton Park not only boasts a capacity grid, but eight reserves as well. All three of our race winners from this season are on the grid, led by Championship leader Chris Roberts’ BMW M4. He had a win at both Oulton and Donington and currently has a four-point lead over Rob Wakelin’s Class F leading Honda Civic.
Roddie Patterson’s Caterham is third in the Championship and heads Class B. He’s had two overall podiums, but is still seeking his first win of the season. Although fourth in the table and leading Class A, Garry Wardle will be missing from this weekend’s lone-up, after his huge crash after the flag at Donington.
Having taken a win in round four at Donington, Mark Primett will be looking for a repeat as he continues to get used to his super quick MG Midget. He is currently fifth in the table and second in Class C behind Paterson. Returning former multiple champion Paul Dobson debuted his newly built flame splitting Mazda RX7 at Donington, took two class E wins, heads the class and is sixth overall.
Our frontrunners have plenty of challengers however, notably in Class A where reigning Champion Simon Allaway will be out to kick start his season with the mighty Lotus Esprit V8. He missed the first round at Oulton when a driveshaft broke in practice, but was third in race two from the back of the grid. But missing Donington too, he has a lot of catching up to do.
Championship sponsor is due out in his Holden Commodore, while round one winer Andrew Southcott is back to with his MG Midget Lenham. Paul Rankin super quick Westfield had a fourth overall at Donington and has proven pace, he is currently second in class behind Wardle.
Paul and Richard Wright bring their Subaru Impreza and BMW M4, while Andy Thomas continues to progress with his Ginetta GTA in his comeback year. Jason Hennefer and Gary Warburton make a welcome return to in their respective Ford Fiesta ST and Spaceframe Mini, while Nick Haynes completes the class in his TVR Chimaera.
Although Paterson and Primett lead the way in Class B, Deri Davies’ Darrian heads a host of challengers too. He was second at Donington, but with former Champion Jamie Cryer’s Ginetta G20, Andrew Armiger’s Vauxhall Tigra, Alek and Connor Modro’s Westfield’s, plus Paul Masters returning after his Westfield’s engine went at the opening round, anyone could be on the class podium, if not overall.
There is just the one car in Class C with Jack Ives’ Caterham, but in Class D seven rivals will be hoping to upset Roberts’ formbook. Paul Goodlad’s VW Scirocco is currently second in class, from Steven Parker’s BMW M235i, complete with aircon. But Zack Booth’s Renault Megane could cause an upset, if his reliability can match his pace.
Marshall Groves can never be discounted in his Vauxhall Vectra, while John Madoc-Jones makes his seasonal debut in his BMW E46 330, Bob Claxton brings his VW Golf GTI and Richy Briscow hopes to make his race debut, after issues at Donington in qualifying left his Megane sidelined.
Howard Hunt’s MG ZS180 had been leading Class E until Dobson returned, but an off at Coppice in the second Donington race cost him dearly. Richard and Matt Hibert’s shared Honda Civic Type R currently hols third in class. William and Georgina Bartlett will also be sharing their Renault Clio again. Jonjo Lee makes his Class E debut in a Honda Civic Type R, having moved up from a Class F Mini Cooper. Brian Gilsenan continued to get used to his Renault Clio in his debut year and there are Honda Civic’s for Graham Waterhouse and Chris Stone too.
In Class F Louie Dobson’s Honda Civic is Wakelin only rival, while Stuart Burnett’s Spire GTR runs solo in Class F.
Errol Taylor’s Class F Toyota Yaris heads the reserve, waiting for his seasonal debut, along with John Edwards-Parton’s Class C XR2. Ross Hampson hopes to debut his Class A BMW 1 Series and former XR2 stars Simon and Mark Robinson hope to join in too with a shared Class E Civic.
Matthew and David Jones are on the reserve list to with their shared Class D Ford Focus, as are third in Class A Ryan Nelson’s Ginetta GTA. Andrew Gash is the final reserve, hoping to make his debut after his Class D Peugeot 207 Gti broke during qualifying at Donington.
Qualifying is at 9.45 for 20 minutes with race one off at 13.30. Then it’s lights out for the final race at 17.05, with both races of 20 minutes duration.
