Goodwood FOS – the hottest ticket in town!

The British Grand Prix, Wimbledon and now the Goodwood Festival of Speed – you well and truly know it’s the height of British summer. Now in its 33rd year, the Festival of Speed, hosted by the Duke of Richmond in the grounds around Goodwood House in Chichester West Sussex – is a must go to event on your motorsport list. There is always something for everyone. Trust us!

The British Automobile Racing club plays an integral part during the festival offering sporting and administration support to enable the mammoth four-day event to run like clockwork. British Hillclimb Championship Manager Tim Wilson is the Senior Clerk of Course for the event and leads a strong officiating team who look after the event help arrange the hill control logistics.  The BARC organise both the Motorsport UK and Auto-cycle Union permits and organise pre-event briefings.

The BARC further support the administration of the event – helping to sign on and check the licences of over 300 drivers as well as organising the army of volunteer marshals in the paddocks, at the start line and hill side that help keep the show on the road.

While the BARC look after the event behind the scenes, – if you are a season regular or first time visitor, we hope these little tit-bits will help you get even more out of your weekend if you are going. Motorsport’s ultimate summer garden party is here. If you have never been – put it on your list for 2027!

1 – The Paddocks – Get in early!

The Paddocks are a real treasure trove to dive into and will leave you feeling gobsmacked or find yourself reminiscing big time. The Ballroom, Cathedral and Brooklands paddocks are situated either side of the main house and in our opinion should be one of the first places to visit. The Festival can get very busy – particularly on the weekend. Car Parks open at 06:30 and Gates open at 07:00 – if you can get there for then – do it. The Paddocks are fairly quiet when the festival opens. Head to the Main Ballroom one first and then explore the others on the other side of the house.

There is always something that takes your breath away. Perhaps you have never seen a car like it in person, or you stumble upon a car that you remember in a period that brings back wonderful memories. Going early enables you to take photos without many people around and are likely to find team members or car owners who will only be too happy to chat about the car or bike they are working on as it’s not too busy for them yet. You might even spot a famous driver or two milling around at the same time as they look to beat the crowds too for a look around. After all, they are fans of the sport as well!

2 – The Hillclimb

The cars you have seen up close – most will take to the hill for at least one run during the day. The total running order is massive, it’s colossal – longer than any other hillclimb event in the UK. If you want to see it all – you won’t be disappointed but it’s over half a day, but if you are into a particular section of cars, F1, Touring, Le Mans, Rallying – have a look online or keep an eye on the big screens as they show up the latest running order for that day.

Find a spot in good time – perhaps a batch or two before your one so you can guarantee a good spot. A particular favourite of ours is the free to stand viewing terrace on the inside of turn one and two – giving you a chance to hear the cars reverberate between the trees over your left shoulder before bursting into view. You will get to see those who are committed, those who are going for a time or those who are out to entertain!

Whether it’s an early Edwardian machine through to the latest creations from Gordon Murray Automotive – you won’t be disappointed with the sight, sound and smell of every era!

3 – Forest Rally Stage

If you are into rallying or not – it is well worth visiting the bespoke Rally Stage at the top of the hill. Take our advice on this one, please. Unless you are a triathlete – take the complementary tractor shuttle up and you can catch them just north of the Ballroom Paddock. It’s bumpy – but it’s fun!

The stage designed by the late, great Hannu Mikkola has it all. Fast, flowing corners to hairpins and ‘s’ bends and even a small jump. Its slippery, chalky surface makes it very interesting – in the dry or wet and you can really explore lots of different vantage points as the stage is one big horse shoe – so you don’t have to walk far to see some good spots.

A full history will be in action from the dawn of rallying right the way through to the modern gladiators in the World Rally Championship. Just be prepared for the dust if it has been dry! You have been warned!

4 – Cartier Lawn

For a more laid back experience – the Cartier Style et Luxe Lawn is the place for you. Some of the most innovative, beautiful, game changing and all out unique are presented in the Concours d’Elegance. Judged in the latter part of the weekend, the public can get up close and personal to the cars all weekend and admire the craftsmanship, design and aura.

Expect to see beautiful sports icons to the more weird and wonderful cars and brands as well.

Speaking of design – do get up close or shall we say, get up close to the bottom of the Central Feature in front of the house. You can’t miss it! Always a closely guarded secret as to what it will look like each year – this year the monument will celebrate Singer and its iconic designs. Some of our favourites in the past include the symbolic 1997 nod to Ferrari, the water misting display from Ford in 2003, the 2005 counterbalancing act to celebrate the involvement of Honda in F1 and the huge rock for Land Rover in 2018.

5 – Timed Shootout

Finally the timed shootout on Sunday is something to behold. If you are there on Sunday, watch it. If you are at home on Sunday – watch it online. Anything and everything takes part, and in true hillclimbing fashion, the slowest time set in the practice runs, run up the hill first with the running order getting faster and faster. The outright hill record sits at a 39.08 by Max Chilton in the electric McMurtry Spéirling.

The time might not be beaten this year, but you get to see some proper cars being driven in anger giving it a go – as they were designed – gunning for a time. Last year James Wallis in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, Scott Speed in the ‘Project Midnight’ Subaru WRX and Romain Dumas in the electric Ford Supertruck all went head-to-head with Dumas in the van eventually sealing the FTD with a 43.23 seconds!

An event at Goodwood never fails to disappoint, and as Roy Salvadori so eloquently put it many years ago – Give me Goodwood on a summer’s day and you can forget the rest.

Singer to headline this year’s Goodwood FOS Central Feature

Singer, the company that has become renowned for its reimaginings of classic Porsches, will headline the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard as part of this year’s Central Feature showcase.

Founded in 2009 by Rob Dickinson, Singer has become a global brand defined by its philosophy, ‘a relentless pursuit of excellence’. It is that mantra that will come to the fore across all four days of this year’s edition of the Festival of Speed.

Since those earliest days, Singer’s mission has been to reimagine what Porsche might have become had the original engineers behind the 911 had access to 21st century technology.

Rob Dickinson, Singer’s Founder, Executive Chairman and Creative Director, said: “I was at the first Festival of Speed in 1993 during a break from touring with the band and never imagined my life would take the twists and turns that resulted in my fledgling design company being invited to attend in 2015.

“The Festival of Speed has kept us incredibly honest in the decade that followed. Knowing that our work will debut each year on an ever-larger world stage has repeatedly focused our minds and demanded rigour in everything we do.

“From the cars themselves to the way we connect with the automotive community, striving to impress the hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts who gather at The Duke of Richmond’s amazing event has been incredibly important in shaping our work.”

The Duke of Richmond CBE DL, added: “Singer has been an immensely popular partner of Goodwood for over a decade, regularly using the Festival of Speed to unveil their latest work.

“The design and detail of their incredible, bespoke creations is matched only by the quality of the engineering that underpins them; they really are as close to art as you can get in the modern automotive world.

“It is therefore wonderfully fitting to see this extraordinary craft celebrated through one of Gerry Judah’s monumental sculptures.”

Goodwood announces 2026 Festival of Speed theme

The Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard is poised to rekindle many of motorsport’s most famous rivalries from down the years after announcing its theme for 2026: ‘The Rivals – Epic Racing Duels’.

Set to bring legendary battles back to life – be it on two or four wheels, a race track or rally course – the West Sussex venue is gearing up to celebrate the teams, drivers and riders that have shaped the history of motorsport.

Two particular rivalries will be form the crux of the celebrations on July 9-12, and they will be featured heavily both on the famous Goodwood Hill and across the legendary Estate.

The story of James Hunt and Niki Lauda’s monumental battle for the 1976 Formula 1 World Championship has transcended motorsport, and the Festival of Speed will mark the 50th Anniversary of that sensational year.

Also sharing the limelight is the saga between Ford and Ferrari that culminated at the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours. More information on exactly what shape these celebrations will take will be revealed in due course.

The Duke of Richmond CBE DL said: “Over the years, Goodwood has seen some fierce competition, whether in the early days of the Circuit when the all-time greats were battling it out, or in more recent years on the hillclimb.”

“Even the IndyCar drivers who joined us at this year’s Revival brought their very own rivalry which played out in the Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration.

“In 2026, the Festival of Speed will capture the drama and intensity of some of motorsport’s greatest contests as we celebrate ‘The Rivals – Epic Racing Duels’, bringing to life the immense determination and talent of the titans of racing history.”

Gordon Murray to be honoured as part of Festival of Speed Central Feature

Gordon Murray will be honoured at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, with some of his greatest hits in car design being part of this year’s Central Feature.

His road car company, Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA), will be a major element of this year’s celebration, symbolising the culmination of Murray’s life that has seen him forge a legacy as one of motorsport’s great innovators across more than six decades.

Goodwood will also once again serve as the host for GMA’s latest car reveal, where the company will showcase its newest creation in front of the world’s eyes for the first time.

“For 60 years I have enjoyed the design and engineering challenge of pushing the boundaries of what’s possible – be that in racing or road cars,” said Murray.

“The supercars that Gordon Murray Automotive builds today are inspired by every car I’ve designed, raced, and owned. Lightweight design, innovative use of materials, the latest technologies, and even bending the laws of physics come into all we do.

“I am thrilled we will celebrate my 60th anniversary of design and the driver-centric cars we produce today at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.”

The Duke of Richmond CBE DL, added: “Gordon has been a part of the Festival of Speed since the very beginning and I’m delighted that he has chosen to celebrate his 60-year career here with us at Goodwood.

“His name is synonymous with engineering art and superlative automotive design, which has seen him triumph at the very pinnacle of motorsport with five world championships and create the most coveted supercars.”

Goodwood announces theme for 2025 Festival of Speed

The Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard is set for its biggest celebration of Formula 1 in 2025, with the pinnacle of motorsport sitting at the core of the four-day event’s theme – ‘The Winning Formula – Champions and Challengers.’

This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the Formula 1 World Championship and Goodwood is gearing up to encapsulate F1’s relentless pursuit of excellence that teams and drivers have striven to find down the years.

Champions from the World Rally Championship, World Endurance Championship, Formula E, IndyCar, NASCAR, MotoGP and World Superbikes will also be represented around the West Sussex venue.

In addition, also under the spotlight will be 125 years of motorsport competition, which began with the likes of the Gordon Bennett Cup and the Thousand Mile Trial at the beginning of the 20th century.

On top of all of that, the Festival of Speed will additionally commemorate the 100th anniversary of Alfa Romeo’s victory in the inaugural World Manufacturers’ Championship with the pioneering P2.

Next year will see the motorsport world signify the 75th anniversary of the F1 world championship, and those impending celebrations have inspired the Festival of Speed theme in 2025.

“The Festival of Speed is uniquely placed to reflect on motorsport’s rich history and heritage and I am delighted that in 2025 we will do this through the lens of ‘The Winning Formula’,” said The Duke of Richmond.

“Individuals, teams, vehicles and championships have always embodied this mindset to push the boundaries of achievement, never more so than in Formula 1, which next year celebrates the 75th anniversary of its World Championship.

“Having recently celebrated 75 years of motorsport at Goodwood, we know what a significant anniversary this is for Formula 1, and we’re looking forward to paying our own tribute as part of the worldwide festivities.”

The Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard celebrated its 30th Anniversary in spectacular style this past weekend (July 13-16) as a bumper crowd flocked to West Sussex for the 2023 edition of motoring’s greatest garden party.

Bringing together a host of eclectic road and competition cars, legendary drivers, riders and global manufacturers, this year’s Festival of Speed was one of milestone accolades as it focused on the past, present and future for both the venue and industry as a whole.

Sadly, the event did see a 30-year first take place as organisers were forced to cancel Saturday’s planned schedule in response to a Met Office weather warning for high winds, with 50mph gusts battering the south coast.

The event resumed as planned on Sunday and – along with the action that took place across Thursday and Friday – those in attendance were treated to fest of edge-of-the-seat moments that will undoubtedly live long in the memory.

In addition to it being the 30th year of the Festival of Speed, this year’s theme – Goodwood 75 – saw the world-famous attraction celebrate 75 years of motorsport at Goodwood whilst the likes of Porsche, Lotus and McLaren also marked their own special anniversaries.

As always, a stunning Central Feature took pride of place outside Goodwood House and this year it commemorated 75 years of Porsche. The incredible sculpture, created by Gerry Judah, paid homage to more than seven decades of the German marque with several iconic models taking centre stage.

Whilst the Central Feature stood tall for all to see, jaw-dropping machinery was around almost every turn with a wave of new cars launched, the Supercar Paddock showcasing exotic machines and Electric Avenue offering a glimpse into the present and future for the automotive industry.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the Festival of Speed without a plethora of star names and this year proved to be no different with the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Travis Pastrana, Oscar Piastri, Casey Stoner and Mick Schumacher being just some of the motorsport royalty that attended.
