BARC enjoys weekend to remember at blockbuster Convoy in the Park

Donington Park provided the backdrop for a blockbuster two days of track action this past weekend (August 20/21) as the British Automobile Racing Club took centre stage at Convoy of the Park.

On what proved to be a weekend to remember, thousands of fans flocked to the Leicestershire venue for a festival of all things trucking – with seven championships arguably stealing the show on-track.

Headlining was five blockbuster contests from the British Truck Racing Championship, where there was action aplenty across both Division’s 1 & 2. In Division 1, reigning champion Ryan Smith scored a brace of wins whilst there were further victories for Simon Reid, David Jenkins and Michael Oliver.

Four different drivers also triumphed in Division 2 with former double title winner Luke Garrett leading the way with a commanding pair of wins. John Powell, Brad Smith and Adam Bint also tasted success as they topped the podium in the remaining three bouts.

The British Endurance Championship enjoyed a starring role on Saturday afternoon with a two-hour contest and it was the Rob Boston Racing pairing of Tom Jackson and Wayne Marrs that ultimately stole the show in their Mercedes GT3.

After blasting to pole position in qualifying, the duo then produced a commanding performance in the series’ penultimate event of the season to win by almost a full lap ahead of Huge Cook Racing and RaceLab.

Will Gibson bagged a hat-trick of wins in the Legends Cars National Championship to close the gap to Miles Rudman in the standings. Gibson paired raw pace with consistency over the course of both days to become the most successful driver in the series of 2022 to-date.

Rudman made sure he limited the damage to his chief title rival with a double of his own whilst Stephen Whitelegg chalked up the remaining victory that was up for grabs.

Jimmy Broadbent and Gordie Mutch took a step closer to lifting the Praga Cup title as they claimed a superb win in the first of the weekend’s two 60-minute contests.

Broadbent arguably delivered one of the moments of the event as he charged from fifth to first in just a single lap. Sunday’s second race saw the duo of Charles Hall and Scott Mittell edge out the impressive Shane Kelly to win.

The Junior Saloon Car Championship had its fair share of drama with just one of its two scheduled races being completed. A number of incidents in the opening encounter brought out a lengthy red flag stoppage before it was decided that racing would not resume.

Race two would run to its scheduled distance later in the day with leading rookie Maximus Hall scoring a pivotal win to close the gap to series leader Harry Hickton. Daire Flock and CJ Morgan joined the Westbourne Motorsport driver on the rostrum.

Jon Woolfitt proved to be in a league of his own in the North West Centre’s flagship category, the CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship. At the wheel of his Spire GTR, Woolfitt didn’t put a wheel wrong to take a clean sweep; pole position and two race wins.

Bringing the curtain down on an entertaining two days at Donington Park was two races from the Pickup Truck Racing Championship. George Turiccki – who is looking to make it three consecutive titles in-a-row – maintained his march towards the crown with another dominant double.

Donington Park plays host to the British Automobile Racing Club for the second successive weekend (August 20/21) this Saturday and Sunday for one of the biggest events on the UK motorsport calendar; Convoy in the Park.

BARC North West Centre delivers Croft cracker

The British Automobile Racing Club’s North West Centre took centre stage at Croft Circuit this past weekend (August 6/7) where five championships delivered a feast of on-track action.

Basked in bright sunshine, the North Yorkshire venue was the place to be as the latest chapter of the 2022 season continued – and it didn’t disappoint.

The North West Centre’s flagship category – the CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship – emerged as one of the headline acts with a near 20-car grid producing two frenetic contests.

Jon Woolfitt emerged as the driver to beat and he was arguably in a league of his own behind the wheel of his Spire GTR, winning both races. Woolfitt headed Andrew Southcott and Richard Rudd in race one before beating Rudd and Simon Allaway in the second.

The Caterham Graduates Racing Club provided plenty of entertainment across both days with no less than four races being run. The Sigma 135 class has arguably been all about one driver this year and Croft proved to be no different as Jamie Winrow ran riot.

Having scored countless victories already this year, Winrow added two more to his account although he was pushed all the way by James McCall. The amalgamated Sigma 150 and Sigmax races had a familiar feel to them as well as Harry Senior bagged a dominant double.

Jamie Petters enjoyed a dream weekend as he continued his recent run of form in the Junior Saloon Car Championship. Hot on the heels of clinching his first win of the year at Knockhill, the former Rookie Cup champion was back on the top step again.

After pacing qualifying to snare pole position, Petters didn’t put a wheel wrong to beat Daire Flock in a frantic opener before Harvey Dent pipped Maximus Hall to score his first-ever win in race two. Petters then came back to the fore in race three to double his Croft tally.

The battle for supremacy in the Classic 2CV Racing Club is poised to go down to the wire at Snetterton later this month after title protagonists Nick Crispin and David O’Keeffe scored a win apiece.

With the coveted 24-hour race bringing the curtain down on another fine season for the one-make series in just a few weeks, the penultimate event of the year proved crucial in deciding who will hold the advantage heading to Norfolk.

O’Keeffe – who trails Crispin in the points – was the first to strike as he scored a narrow yet decisive victory in the opening bout before Crispin hit back in race two, coming out on top of an enthralling wheel-to-wheel battle with Luca Proietti.

Elsewhere, George Turiccki was perfection personified as the Pickup Truck Racing Championship rounded out the weekend action at Croft. After a few tough races, the reigning double champion got his title defence back on-track with a hat-trick of wins.

Setting the fourth best time in both parts of qualifying, Turiccki was a tour-de-force as he charged to the front in all three encounters to take a maximum points haul; thus further strengthening his lead at the summit of the standings.

JSCC to offer prize test in GT Cup Lamborghini

The Junior Saloon Car Championship has teamed up with leading GT Cup outfit TopCats Racing and Hex.com to offer one lucky competitor the chance to drive a Lamborghini Super Trofeo.

Open to drivers that are competing in their second or third year in the one-make series, the winner of the prize will be chosen by a select panel of judges and will be based on who is deemed to have shown the ‘Spirit of the JSCC’.

Powered by a monstrous V10 engine and producing in excess of 600bhp, the Lamborghini Super Trofeo is fitted with a huge aero package and paddle shift gearbox; making it a a true thoroughbred racer.

The prize test will see the winner get behind the wheel of the Lamborghini alongside an instructor at a yet to be determined circuit. Once driving duties have been completed, the winner will jump into the passenger seat for some hot laps with one of the cars regular drivers.

BARC delivers Silverstone spectacle on Platinum Jubilee weekend

The British Automobile Racing Club enjoyed a Platinum Jubilee weekend (June 4/5) to remember as it continued its 2022 season in style at Silverstone.

As much of the UK marked the Queen’s 70 years on the throne with street parties, the BARC showcased some of its biggest and best championships on the Northamptonshire venues National circuit; and it didn’t disappoint.

Saturday saw the Britcar Trophy take centre stage around the Home of British Motor Racing as it served up two action-packed 50-minute bouts. Boasting a near 30-car grid, the series saw wheel-to-wheel battles run throughout the field however nobody could beat invitation entrants Lucky Khera and Lee Frost.

Running under the Race Lab banner in their BMW E46, the pair reigned supreme in both contests – the second by a commanding margin of more than 19 seconds.

The Praga Cup continued its season in style with two one-hour races putting fans well and truly on the edge of their seats. Overall honours in race one went the way of the University of Wolverhampton Racing team, who had Shane Kelly and Stefano Leaney sharing driving duties.

After enduring a less than ideal result in the opener, Jimmy Broadbent and Gordie Mutch bounced back in race two to maintain their championship challenge, comfortably taking the chequered flag ahead of the Mittel Cars entry.

Steve McDermid continued his sensational start to the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship season with another double-winning performance. Defending the title he clinched last year, the MG ZR driver didn’t put a wheel wrong to strengthen his position at the standings summit.

It was all change in the Junior Saloon Car Championship as spoils were shared between two drivers, neither of which were Harry Hickton. Having been the benchmark since the get-go, Hickton had hoped to extend his winning streak but despite his best efforts he was forced to settle for a brace of second place finishes.

Gabriel Doyle-Parfait just edged Hickton in the first encounter before Maximus Hall came to the fore in race two, chalking up his second victory of the season.

Nick Crispin and Lien Davies scored a win apiece in the Classic 2CV Racing Club whilst Bryan Bransom and Russell Dack were victorious in two the Kumho BMW Championship races.

Rounding out the weekend’s action was a remarkable 45-minute bout from the Carbon8 Hyundai Coupe Cup, which ended with the top three being covered by little under a second.

Adam Jones, Alistair Dendy, Luca Staccini, Alex Cursely and Wayne Rockett were all in the mix towards the sharp end of the grid however it was to be Jones that ultimately triumphed, narrowly pipping Dendy and Staccini in a run to the line.

BARC enjoys fun in the sun at Snetterton

The British Automobile Racing Club made its mark at Snetterton this past weekend (May 14/15) as a number of championships continued their 2022 campaigns around the challenging 300 circuit.

Headlining the action on Saturday afternoon was a blockbuster three-hour British Endurance Championship race. After storming to pole position, the McLaren 720S GT3 pairing of Lucky Khera and Ewan Hankey converted their front row start into a dominant victory of more than 20 seconds.

Wayne Marrs and Tom Jackson guided their Rob Boston Racing Mercedes GT3 to second whilst the Lamborghini Super Trefeo Evo of Iain Campell and Oliver Webb completed the podium in third.

There was plenty of excitement in the two Praga Cup contests with race one seeing a popular pairing claim victory. Despite starting from the pit lane, Jimmy Broadbent and Gordie Mutch produced a sensational performance to secure a narrow victory.

Broadbent and Mutch then went on to make it a weekend to remember on Sunday as they once again stormed to victory, this time from pole position as led home the Raw Motorsport pairing of Matt Bell and Robert Wheldon.

Bryan Branson and Jasver Sapra were the dominant force in the Britcar Trophy as they reigned supreme with two superlative wins ahead of what was an ultra-competitive chasing pack.

Harry Hickton’s stranglehold of the Junior Saloon Car Championship continued as he bagged another brace of wins. Entering the weekend as the series leader, the multiple race-winner added to his tally with two emphatic performances around the 2.99-mile circuit.

The Citroen Saxo driver held off Jacob Heap in the opening bout before then repeating the feat in race two, this time holding off Maximus Hall – the two of them having pulled clear of the field by more than ten seconds.

In the Carbon8 Hyundai Coupe Cup, Alistair Dendy powered his way to an impressive double with Alex Cursely and Wayen Rockett emerging as his nearest challengers whilst James Card and Niall Bradley shared the spoils in the Kumho BMW Championship.

Rounding out the weekend’s track action was a 45-minute race from the Snetterton Saloons. Sapra – who triumphed in the Britcar Trophy – emerged as the driver to beat as he powered his BMW E36 M3 to the top step of the podium – taking the chequered by 17 seconds in the end.

BARC championships produce thrilling weekend of racing at Cadwell Park

The British Automobile Racing Club took centre stage at Cadwell Park this past weekend (April 23/24) and delivered a feast of entertainment as a number of championships wrote the latest chapter in their 2022 campaigns.

Making what is to be the one and only visit to the Lincolnshire circuit this year, no less than six categories were in attendance and each of them put on a show for the bumper crowd that was in attendance.

Off the back of what was a pulsating season-opener at Silverstone last month, the Caterham Graduates Championship saw six races play out around the undulating twists and turns – two for each category.

In the Sigma 150 class, Harry Senior reigned supreme to score yet another brace of wins whilst Jamie Winrow did the same in the Sigma 135 category. Max Haynes made it a clean sweep of double victories for drivers in the championship as he swept the Sigmax races.

The Junior Saloon Car Championship saw Harry Hickton continue his impressive start to the season as he racked up a pair of victories. Coming off the back of a sensational season-opener, Hickton add two more wins to his CV to strengthen his hold on the early points lead.

Had it not been for Maximus Hall in race one, Hickton could have clinched a hat-trick of wins. Hall withstood the charging championship leader in the opening bout to clinch his first win of the season in impressive fashion.

The CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship – the North West Centre’s flagship series – also served up a trio of enthralling races, with the spoils being shared between Paul Dobson and Jon Woolfitt, the latter winning twice.

Arguably the oldest cars to compete over the course of the weekend came in the Classic 2CV Racing Club, which lifted the curtain on its 2022 season with two frenetic races. Gary Adnitt reigned supreme as he clinched an impressive brace of wins.

The Carbon8 Hyundai Coupe Cup hit the track for the first time this year with a bumper grid however at the front, a familiar name stole the show. After being the driver to beat in 2021, Alex Cursely picked up where he left off last year by storming to a brace of wins.

Rounding out the weekend’s track action was a trio of races from the Super Series by the British Superkart Racing Club. Matt Robinson and Lee Harpham emerged as the standout drivers as they bagged a win apiece.

Sun shines on Silverstone as BARC serves up blockbuster weekend

The British Automobile Racing Club basked in the Spring sunshine at Silverstone this past weekend (March 26/27) as a number of championships kick-started their 2022 campaigns, serving up two days of blockbuster entertainment on the International layout around the Home of British Motor Racing.

Headlining the weekend’s track action was no less than eight races from the Classic Touring Car Racing Club, in particular the Super Tourers which proved to be a smash-hit as they wound back the years to a golden era of the British Touring Car Championship.

Jason Minshaw piloted the 1998 Rickard Rydell title-winning Volvo S40 to victory in the opening bout before Anthony Reid – who was reunited with his 1998 Nissan Primera – claimed the plaudits in race two after a thrilling battle with Minshaw and John Cleland.

Stephen Primett drove his Ford Escort Mk1 to the top step of the podium in both amalgamated Pre ’66 & Pre ’83 races whilst Dave Griffin did the same in the combined Pre ’93 and Jaguar Challenge encounters.

The theme of one driver reigning supreme in both contests continued in the Classic Thunder and Blue Oval Saloon Series races as Jason Davies triumphed in his Ford Sierra Cosworth.

Big grids ran throughout the Caterham Graduates Championship too, which saw two drivers lay down their markers as the early pace-setters. Jamie Winrow was in a league of his own in the 135 bouts whilst Harry Senior starred in the combined 150 and Sigmax races.

Harry Hickton enjoyed the perfect start to the new Junior Saloon Car Championship season as he charged to a commanding pair of race wins. Entering the season as one of the title favourites in the one-make series, Hickton didn’t put a wheel wrong to prevail out front.

James Card completed a clean sweep in the Kumho BMW Championship as he picked up where he left off last year, clinching pole position and then following it up with back-to-back victories in his trusty E36 M3.

Rounding off the weekend’s racing was an abundance of wheel-to-wheel action from the Mini 7 Racing Club. With the battle for supremacy going down to the wire, the Dunlop Mini Challenge supported by Mini Spares Miglia class saw Rupert Deeth and Andrew Jordan share the spoils.

There was further success for the Jordan family as Andrew’s father, Mike, produced a superlative display in the Dunlop Mini Challenge supported by Mini Spares Se7en category bagged an impressive pair of race wins.

Dennis Carter – BARC Gold Medal Recipient: Spending nearly three decades working for the Club, firstly as Competitions Director and then as Chief Executive, Dennis has contributed an inordinate amount to both national and international motorsport, as well as to the BARC, and it is only fitting that he is honoured with a Gold Medal – the highest honour to be handed out by the Club and its Council.

Ian Watson – BARC Special Recognition Recipient: After spending two decades working for the Club, Ian retired from his role as General Manager at the end of the 2020 season and he was honoured for his services to the BARC at the Awards Evening along with Dale Wells.

Miles Rudman – Winner of The President’s Cup: Awarded to the most successful driver competing under international level, the Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres title winner clinched his second crown in 2021 with 17 wins to his name – making him the standout recipient of the coveted President’s Cup.

Charlie Hand – Winner of The Peter Collins Trophy: Awarded to the most promising newcomer competing in a BARC championship, Hand was a worthy winner of The Peter Collins Trophy as he dominated the Junior Saloon Car Championship on his way to the title.

Chris Davenport – Winner of The Sir Clive Bossom Trophy: Designed to recognise and reward BARC Member Marshals for their service and dedication, this award is handed out to the marshal that completes the most volunteering days in a season. Last year saw Chris complete a total of 28 to clinch The Sir Clive Bossom Trophy.

Dan Cammish – Porsche Carrera Cup GB Champion: Returning to the Porsche Carrera Cup GB last year, Cammish re-wrote the history books as he clinched a third title. For 2022, he’s back in the BTCC and teaming up with reigning champion Ashley Sutton to spearhead the NAPA Racing UK entry.

Claire Hedley – British Endurance and Britcar Trophy Championship Coordinator: Having grown exponentially in recent years, Britcar embarks on a new chapter this year as it runs the new-for-2022 British Endurance Championship as well as the Britcar Trophy and Praga Cup. Championship Coordinator Claire Hedley gives us the lowdown on what is to come.
