Bumper crowd savours blockbuster Convoy on the Plain at Thruxton

Thruxton Circuit provided the setting for an unmissable two days of on and off-track entertainment this past weekend (July 8/9) as the British Automobile Racing Club took centre stage on home turf for Convoy on the Plain.

Living up to its promise of being a festival for all things trucking, a bumper crowd flocked through the gates of the Hampshire venue to soak up everything from wheel-to-wheel racing and dazzling show trucks to real life transformers and live music – plus much more.

Whilst there was plenty to see and do off-track, edge-of-the-seat thrills were in full force on it as no less than seven championships tackled the fastest circuit in the UK; with the British Truck Racing Championship topping the bill.

Returning to action after a near two-month hiatus, the heavyweight behemoths left a lasting impression as they produced four blockbuster contests around the 2.356-mile layout.

Division 1 spoils were split between Ryan Smith, Stuart Oliver and John Bowler while Paul Rivett and John Powell claimed a pair of wins apiece in Division 2. Those triumphs however were somewhat overshadowed by a scary incident that took place in the weekend’s fourth race on Sunday afternoon.

Approaching mid-distance in the contest, series newcomer Neil Yates suffered a throttle pedal jam upon entry into Allard which resulted in his DAF hitting the armco barrier and rolling over the catch fence.

Thankfully, nobody was injured in the incident however the lengthy clean up operation resulted in the BTRC’s final bout – as well as the Pickup Truck Racing Championship’s third race – being cancelled.

Prior to the Pickup Truck Racing Championship’s finale being canned, the series had enjoyed a memorable outing with defending champion Reece Jones bolstering his title charge with a near wheel-perfect double-winning performance.

In the Kumho BMW Championship, Jason West and Michael Vitulli chalked up a win each whilst Ross Alexander and Freddie Hewitt did the same in the MINI CHALLENGE Clubsport with Airtec Motorsport.

Elsewhere, Scott Bugner and Steve McDermid’s captivating back-and-forth battle for supremacy in the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship further intensified as the pair enjoyed a share of the spoils on Sunday.

Fine margins proved to be the difference when it came down to the Morphmy Caterham Graduates Championship. Richard Groom and Ben Wheatley scored a victory each in the two Sigma 135 bouts whilst Amanda Anderson and Harry Senior topped the rostrum in the amalgamated Sigma 150/Sigmax races.

The weekend also saw a triumphant return for OT Publishing Coupe Cup with Toyo Tires stalwart Wayne Rockett. Having previously announced he was stepping back from the popular single-make series, a resurgent Rockett reigned supreme around his home track to win twice.

BARC championships put on entertaining show at Snetterton

The British Automobile Racing Club put on a show around Snetterton’s 300 circuit this past weekend (May 13/14) as a number of championships continued their 2023 campaigns with two days of exceptional action-packed racing.

In what marked the first of several visits to the Norfolk venue for the Club over the course of this season, five categories took centre stage to write the latest chapter of their stories – and they didn’t disappoint those that were watching in attendance and at home via live stream.

One of the leading lights to emerge from the weekend was last year’s Junior Saloon Car champion and winner of the prestigious Peter Collins Trophy at the BARC Championship Awards Evening in February, Maximus Hall.

Hot on the heels of an impressive debut outing in the Vertu Motors MINI CHALLENGE Trophy last month, Hall didn’t put a wheel wrong at Snetterton to ignite his championship charge with two overall victories and a second place finish.

Three frenetic contests – the first of which was won by Nicky Taylor, who had only landed in the country after holidaying in Florida on Saturday morning – around the 2.97-mile layout produced an abundance of overtaking and it was Hall that starred as one of the big movers across both days.

The battle for supremacy across the Morphmy Caterham Graduates Championship ramped up over the course of Saturday and Sunday as the popular single-manufacturer series delivered an impressive six bouts.

In the combined Sigma 150 and Sigmax races, James Wingfield opened his account for the season with a narrow – just 0.048 of a second in fact – win over defending champion Harry Senior. Race two saw Senior strike back with a win of his own but he could do nothing to stop Wingfield from doubling his tally later on in a frenetic finale.

Over in the Sigma 135 category, a bumper 31-car grid had everyone on the edge of their seats as Theo Theato, Ben Wheatley and Richard Groom each claimed a hard-fought win apiece.

Jason West and James Card proved to be the standout performers in the Kumho BMW Championship, with West coming out on top of two captivating encounters with a pair of impressive victories.

Barely anything could split the top two throughout the weekend however it was West that proved too have just enough in hand to stay ahead of multiple title winner and Brands Hatch victor Card.

Over in the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship, spoils were shared as reigning champion Steve McDermid ramped up his title defence with an impressive first victory of the year. Scott Bugner – who was twice a winner at last month’s curtain-raiser – also chalked up yet another win in Sunday’s second bout.

Elsewhere, Luca Staccini Anzanello became the latest race winner in the OT Publishing Coupe Cup with Toyo Tyres. The Italian was perfection personified as he topped qualifying and then triumphed in both races of the much-loved tin top series.

Fans were treated to further slip-streaming Mini action as the Dunlop National Mini Challenge supported by Mini Spares made a guest appearance on the billing. Mike Jordan charged to an impressive double win in the Se7en class whilst Jeff Smith and Kane Astin both triumphed in the Miglia races.

Concluding the weekend’s action was a 45-minute contest from the Uncle Luke’s Snetterton Saloons. After powering his BMW E46 M3 to a commanding pole position in qualifying, Bryan Bransom withstood the challenge of Kevin Clarke and Jasper Sapra to clinch victory.

The British Automobile Racing Club is back on the big screen this weekend (May 13/14) as a number of championships continue their 2023 campaigns at the Snetterton 300 circuit in Norfolk.

In what is the first of several visits to the challenging 2.99-mile track over the course of this year, the Club’s TV cameras will be on-site across Saturday and Sunday to deliver edge-of-the-seat moment on Facebook and YouTube.

Headlining the action will be races from the Vertu Motors MINI CHALLENGE Trophy, MORPHMY Caterham Graduates Championship, Kumho BMW Championship, Lancaster Insurance MGOC Championship and OT Publishing Coupe Cup.

Sun shines on Brands Hatch as BARC serves up Easter extravaganza

The British Automobile Racing Club served up an Easter extravaganza at Brands Hatch this past weekend (April 8/9) as seven more championships lifted the curtain on their 2023 seasons in spectacular fashion.

Basking in the warm Spring sunshine at the famous Kent venue, a bumper crowd were treated to 21 blockbuster races across Saturday and Sunday – each of which were packed with their own thrills and spills.

Headlining the weekend’s action around the 1.2-mile Indy circuit were five contests from the British Truck Racing Championship and they certainly didn’t disappoint; with a near capacity grid of heavyweight behemoths delivering an unmissable show.

In Division 1, two of the series’ most successful drivers staked an early claim to the title by sharing the spoils. Reigning seven time-champion Ryan Smith – who was armed with a brand-new Daimler Freightliner – bagged a hat-trick of wins whilst ten-time champion Stuart Oliver scored a brace of his own.

There was a similar theme in Division 2 as two drivers split the wins; Adam Bint and John Powell. Former champion Bint made one of his best starts to a season in recent years with three emphatic victories whilst championship stalwart Powell reigned supreme in the remaining two bouts.

Three different drivers stood on the top step of the podium in what was an action-packed start to the Vertu Motors MINI CHALLENGE Trophy. Widely regarded as one of the most competitive one-make categories in the UK, no quarter was given throughout the 30-car grid.

Second-year driver Tom Ovenden kicked off proceedings with an impressive victory before Jack Byrne scampered into the distance to win race two, all while an almighty scrap for second place played out behind him. Alex Solley then rounded out proceedings by clinching his maiden win in a shortened third race.

The Pickup Truck Racing Championship also saw three different drivers claim victory. Renowned for producing high-octane wheel-to-wheel moments, the category had everyone on the edge of their seats as they debuted their new two heats and a grand final format.

Pre-season title favourites Matt Simpson, Dale Gent and reigning champion Reece Jones proved to be the class of the field as they led the way out front – taking a win apiece to set up what promises to be an exciting remainder of the season.

Elsewhere, the Morphmy Caterham Graduates Championship served up no less than four races during the weekend, each of them proving to be as captivating as the one that went before it.

Harry Senior and Harry Cramer shared the victories on offer in the amalgamated Sigma 150 and Sigmax races whilst Richard Groom and Ben Wheatley emerged victorious from the two thrilling Sigma 135 bouts that were on offer.

Scott Bugner made a flying start to life in the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship as he opened his 2023 account with two wins.

At the wheel of his MG ZR, Bugner edged out Jack Chapman and multiple champion Steve McDermid in a close opening race before then doubling up for the day with a more comfortable victory ahead of McDermid and Andy Heitman in race two.

Wayne Rockett showcased why he has established himself as one of the most successful drivers to ever compete in the OT Publishing Coupe Cup with Toyo Tires by taking a clean sweep of race victories.

Hot on the heels of finishing the 2022 campaign with the most race wins, Rockett picked up where he left off as he produced a pair of measured drives to lead home Luca Staccini Anzanello and Mark Ridout in both encounters.

Rounding out the weekend’s action was two races from the Kumho BMW Championship, the single-manufacturer series which boasts more than three decades of history and is home to some of the most iconic models that run the badge of the Bavarian brand.

Donning the mantel of defending champion after a sensational 2022 campaign, James Card picked up from where he left off last year with an assured performance in the weekend’s opening contest as he guided his E46 M3 to victory ahead of Jason West.

Roles were reversed in race two however as West staked his claim as one to watch over the course of the year with a somewhat dominant win; leading home Card and Paul Wood to the chequered flag by more than ten seconds.

Caterham Cars revving up for 50th Anniversary celebrations at Donington Park

Caterham Cars is set to celebrate its golden anniversary this year with a special ‘Caterham 50th Festival’ at Donington Park on September 2/3.

Marking five decades of the famous British manufacturer, the two-day event at the Leicestershire venue is poised to commemorate the past, present and future with a number of on and off-track attractions.

Taking centre stage on the circuit will be wall-to-wall racing from Caterham Motorsport as they bring the curtain down on their 2023 campaign for a majority of their championships.

Champions will be crowned in the Academy, Roadsports, 270R and 310R categories whilst the battle for supremacy in the Seven UK Championship is set to reach fever pitch ahead of their finale on the British Touring Car Championship package at Silverstone.

Adding to the full-throttle thrills and spills will also be contests from the Caterham Graduates Racing Club and Classic Sports Car Club’s Magnificent Sevens Series.

Away from the racing, visitors will have plenty to be captivated by with confirmation that there will be an owners display and parade, pop-up club house and merchandise store and paddock party.

Morphmy becomes new Caterham Graduates Racing Club title sponsor

The Caterham Graduates Racing Club has announced that Morphmy will become the title sponsor of its CGRC Championship and CGRC Trophy for the 2023 season.

Owned by Rob Oldland, the design and print company has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with the popular one-make series and that is now only set to expand moving into next year.

Marc Noaro, CGRC Chairman, said: “Rob has been a friend of the club for a few years now, he is more than just a supplier who delivers to the specification, he’s been invested and engaged personally over a long period and we are delighted to be able to take this next step together.

“We think this will benefit our members, the Club, Morphmy and our causes immensely – such as the BARC Marshals Fund – and there are some immediate benefits that will be felt before a single wheel turns next year.”

BARC North West Centre concludes season in style at Oulton Park

The British Automobile Racing Club’s North West Centre concluded its 2022 season this past Saturday (October 15) with an action-packed one-day meeting at Oulton Park.

Basking in the autumnal sunshine at the Cheshire venue, three of the Club’s championships took centre stage to bring the curtain down on their own campaigns and serve up plenty of edge-of-the-seat entertainment to those that had flocked trackside.

Headlining the action was four blockbuster encounters from the Caterham Graduates Championship. After a season of big grids and close-quarter racing, the single-make series capped off a year to remember with yet more thrills and spills around the International layout.

In the amalgamated Sigmax and Sigma 135 races, nobody could stop Harry Senior. Having wrapped up the Sigmax crown prior to the finale, you could be forgiven in thinking that Senior might have taken his foot off the throttle but that wasn’t to be the case at all.

Storming to pole position in qualifying, Senior led home Stephen Arnell and Jamie Winrow by more than seven seconds in the opening contest before edging out Max Haynes and Andy Molsom by the larger margin of 35 seconds in race two.

The Sigma 150 races had everyone captivated too as Ben Winrow and Stephen Clark put on a show. They could hardly be separated in a pulsating first bout, where Winrow triumphed by a little over three tenths of a second. Clark would then strike back in race two as he scored a victory of his own, this time from Jamie Ellwood and Harry Cramer.

Spoils were shared in the North West Centre’s flagship category, the CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship, which boasted an impressive entry list of more than 30 cars.

Jon Woolfitt – who has been one of the leading lights in the championship this year – guided his Spire GTR to victory lane in race one before Roddie Paterson scored a memorable win at the wheel of his Caterham C400 in the day’s second and final contest.

The Kumho BMW Championship also saw two different drivers stand on the top step of the podium over the course of their finale. Russell Dack reigned supreme ahead of Bryan Bransom and James Card in the day’s opening race before Jason West led home Card and Dack in race two.

Rounding out the track action around the picturesque 2.692-mile circuit was three full-throttle races from The Super Series by the British Superkart Racing Club. Andy Gulliford, Matt Robinson and Paul Platt claimed top honours, chalking up a win apiece.

BARC North West Centre brings the action at Anglesey

Anglesey Circuit provided the setting for the British Automobile Racing Club’s North West Centre this past weekend (September 3/4) where the magnificent surroundings of the coastal track were complimented with some spectacular action.

On what proved to be a blockbuster two days of wheel-to-wheel entertainment in North Wales, the Caterham Graduates Championship, CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship and the Junior Saloon Car Championship wrote the latest chapter in their 2022 campaigns.

Delivering six races and boasting bumper grids throughout, the Caterham Graduates Championship was undoubtedly one of the headline acts of the weekend. One of the stars of the show could be found in the Sigma 135 category as the juggernaut that is Jamie Winrow maintained his unbeatable form, chalking up another three comfortable wins.

In the amalgamated Sigmax and Sigma 150 races, spoils were shared between three deserving winners. Harry Cramer was victorious in the opener before Kevin Barrett came to the fore in race two to triumph ahead of Stephen Clark and Harry Senior. Race three then saw Max Haynes narrowly edge out Barrett to stand on the top step of the podium.

Harry Hickton got back to winning ways in the Junior Saloon Car Championship as he extended his lead at the summit of the standings, bouncing back in style following what had been a challenging few events for the teenage racer.

Hickton, like the rest of the field, could do nothing to stop Daire Flock from claiming a well-deserved maiden win in the series in race one but from there the weekend belonged to the championship pace-setter.

Victory by half a second over Adam Harding set Hickton on his way in race two before he then doubled his tally by edging out Flock in what was a frenetic third and final contest.

The CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship – the North West Centre’s flagship category – added to the spectacle with a trio of enthralling bouts although the weekend arguably belonged to one driver, Jon Woolfitt.

At the wheel of his Spire GTR, the Class B and overall leader maintained his relentless front-running form with another exemplary performance. Comfortably pacing qualifying, Woolfitt charged to a hat-trick of lights-to-flag wins to subsequently strengthen his championship lead.

The Jordan family had plenty to smile about as they claimed three of the four wins on offer in the Mini 7 Racing Club. Small in stature but packing a real punch under the bonnet, the one-make series didn’t disappoint with thrills and spills playing out at almost every corner.

Former BTCC champion and defending Miglia title holder Andrew Jordan enjoyed a near-perfect weekend as he converted pole position into a commanding double win. Over in the Se7en class his father Mike clinched a victory of his own, with Connor O’Brien picking up the remaining win that was up for grabs.

On the longer International Circuit, The Super Series by the British Superkart Racing Club had those in attendance on the edge of their seats. As he has done on so many occasions this year, #0 plate runner Liam Morley served up an impressive performance.

Charging to pole position in qualifying, Morley stormed to victory in races one and two before seeing his streak come to an end by Lee Harpham, who was victorious in a pulsating finale.

BARC North West Centre delivers Croft cracker

The British Automobile Racing Club’s North West Centre took centre stage at Croft Circuit this past weekend (August 6/7) where five championships delivered a feast of on-track action.

Basked in bright sunshine, the North Yorkshire venue was the place to be as the latest chapter of the 2022 season continued – and it didn’t disappoint.

The North West Centre’s flagship category – the CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship – emerged as one of the headline acts with a near 20-car grid producing two frenetic contests.

Jon Woolfitt emerged as the driver to beat and he was arguably in a league of his own behind the wheel of his Spire GTR, winning both races. Woolfitt headed Andrew Southcott and Richard Rudd in race one before beating Rudd and Simon Allaway in the second.

The Caterham Graduates Racing Club provided plenty of entertainment across both days with no less than four races being run. The Sigma 135 class has arguably been all about one driver this year and Croft proved to be no different as Jamie Winrow ran riot.

Having scored countless victories already this year, Winrow added two more to his account although he was pushed all the way by James McCall. The amalgamated Sigma 150 and Sigmax races had a familiar feel to them as well as Harry Senior bagged a dominant double.

Jamie Petters enjoyed a dream weekend as he continued his recent run of form in the Junior Saloon Car Championship. Hot on the heels of clinching his first win of the year at Knockhill, the former Rookie Cup champion was back on the top step again.

After pacing qualifying to snare pole position, Petters didn’t put a wheel wrong to beat Daire Flock in a frantic opener before Harvey Dent pipped Maximus Hall to score his first-ever win in race two. Petters then came back to the fore in race three to double his Croft tally.

The battle for supremacy in the Classic 2CV Racing Club is poised to go down to the wire at Snetterton later this month after title protagonists Nick Crispin and David O’Keeffe scored a win apiece.

With the coveted 24-hour race bringing the curtain down on another fine season for the one-make series in just a few weeks, the penultimate event of the year proved crucial in deciding who will hold the advantage heading to Norfolk.

O’Keeffe – who trails Crispin in the points – was the first to strike as he scored a narrow yet decisive victory in the opening bout before Crispin hit back in race two, coming out on top of an enthralling wheel-to-wheel battle with Luca Proietti.

Elsewhere, George Turiccki was perfection personified as the Pickup Truck Racing Championship rounded out the weekend action at Croft. After a few tough races, the reigning double champion got his title defence back on-track with a hat-trick of wins.

Setting the fourth best time in both parts of qualifying, Turiccki was a tour-de-force as he charged to the front in all three encounters to take a maximum points haul; thus further strengthening his lead at the summit of the standings.

Caterham Graduates Racing Club and Kumho BMW Championship star at Snetterton

The Caterham Graduates Racing Club and Kumho BMW Championship headlined an entertaining two days of track action as the British Automobile Racing Club took centre stage at Snetterton this past weekend (July 9/10).

Bathed in bright sunshine, the Norfolk venue played host to no less than 12 races in front of an enthusiastic crowd that had flocked trackside.

Kicking off the second half of its season, the Caterham Graduates Racing Club wrote a majority of the headlines around the 2.96-mile circuit with five pulsating races getting those in attendance on the edge of their seats.

Jamie Winrow continued his fine form by adding two more wins to his unbeaten streak in the Sigma 135 Class. Having been the driver to beat from the outset, Winrow was perfection personified as he charged to a commanding pair of victories.

The two amalgamated Sigma 150 and Sigmax contests saw Harry Senior a produce similar level of dominance. After narrowly missing out on pole position in qualifying, Senior reigned supreme in style as he narrowly edged out Stephen Clark on both occasions.

As a cherry on top for fans of the popular one-make series, Sunday saw the Caterham Graduates Racing Club stage the inaugural Yokohama Team Relay – a three-hour endurance.

BB Racing charged to victory as the trio of Kevin Barrett, Neil Sturgess and Nigel Smith teamed up to claim the overall spoils.

The Kumho BMW Championship continued its 2022 campaign with a pair of breathtaking races. Series stalwart Russell Dack edged out Bryan Bansom in race one before Bansom struck back later on, securing the win in race two.

Liam Morley was arguably the class of the field in the The Super Series by the British Superkart Racing Club. Running the 0 plate on his machine, Morley was in a league of his own as he stormed to a hat-trick of wins.

Rounding out the weekend’s action at Snetterton was a 45-minute bout from the Uncle Luke’s Saloon Series, which saw a bumper grid of powerful tin tops go wheel-to-wheel.

The BMW M3 duo of Nigel Innes and Bansom proved to be the class of the field a they lapped all but one car in their battle for supremacy. Ultimately it was Innes that would clinch the win, taking the chequered flag by four seconds.

BARC championships produce thrilling weekend of racing at Cadwell Park

The British Automobile Racing Club took centre stage at Cadwell Park this past weekend (April 23/24) and delivered a feast of entertainment as a number of championships wrote the latest chapter in their 2022 campaigns.

Making what is to be the one and only visit to the Lincolnshire circuit this year, no less than six categories were in attendance and each of them put on a show for the bumper crowd that was in attendance.

Off the back of what was a pulsating season-opener at Silverstone last month, the Caterham Graduates Championship saw six races play out around the undulating twists and turns – two for each category.

In the Sigma 150 class, Harry Senior reigned supreme to score yet another brace of wins whilst Jamie Winrow did the same in the Sigma 135 category. Max Haynes made it a clean sweep of double victories for drivers in the championship as he swept the Sigmax races.

The Junior Saloon Car Championship saw Harry Hickton continue his impressive start to the season as he racked up a pair of victories. Coming off the back of a sensational season-opener, Hickton add two more wins to his CV to strengthen his hold on the early points lead.

Had it not been for Maximus Hall in race one, Hickton could have clinched a hat-trick of wins. Hall withstood the charging championship leader in the opening bout to clinch his first win of the season in impressive fashion.

The CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship – the North West Centre’s flagship series – also served up a trio of enthralling races, with the spoils being shared between Paul Dobson and Jon Woolfitt, the latter winning twice.

Arguably the oldest cars to compete over the course of the weekend came in the Classic 2CV Racing Club, which lifted the curtain on its 2022 season with two frenetic races. Gary Adnitt reigned supreme as he clinched an impressive brace of wins.

The Carbon8 Hyundai Coupe Cup hit the track for the first time this year with a bumper grid however at the front, a familiar name stole the show. After being the driver to beat in 2021, Alex Cursely picked up where he left off last year by storming to a brace of wins.

Rounding out the weekend’s track action was a trio of races from the Super Series by the British Superkart Racing Club. Matt Robinson and Lee Harpham emerged as the standout drivers as they bagged a win apiece.
