Spectacular Snetterton weekend in-store for BARC championships

The British Automobile Racing Club travels to Snetterton this weekend (September 19/20) for a blockbuster event that will see no less than six championships take centre stage around the challenging 300 layout.

In what is one of the standout race meetings on the national motorsport calendar each year, the Norfolk venue is renowned for throwing up thrills and spills – and that theme looks set to continue on what is a pivotal event for many.

Headlining the action will be five titanic encounters from the BTRA British Truck Racing Championship. Lifting the curtain on its campaign at Donington Park last month, the heavyweight behemoths rumble into Snetterton with fireworks set to fly in both classes.

Division 1 currently sees an enthralling battle brewing with Ryan Smith, John Newell, David Jenkins, Stuart Oliver and Martin Gibson all split by just a handful of points. With the battle for supremacy set to intensify, any driver could establish them as the man to beat if they can piece together a strong weekend.

Elsewhere, Division 2 kicked into life with Steven Powell clinching a hat-trick at Donington Park whilst defending champion Luke Garrett also triumphed. Having gone wheel-to-wheel throughout last year, both Powell and Garrett look set to continue their duel for the crown.

The Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres has proven to be as competitive as ever this year and six more races are expected to centre stage. As it stands, there is nothing to separate John Mickel and Daniel Clark at the top of the points.

Both have been at their brilliant best, and they will need to be to remain at the top, as the likes of Miles Rudman, Will Gibson, Connor Mills and Jack Parker will all be keen to make their mark.

Variety is the spice of life when it comes to the Classic Touring Car Racing Club and those in attendance will be able to see saloon cars from decades gone by going wheel-to-wheel across six amalgamated races.

Action from the Classic Race Engines Pre ’66 Touring Cars, Shell Oil Pre 83′ Touring Car Championship, Laser Tools Pre-93 Touring Cars Championship, Simply Serviced Pre-2003 Touring Cars Championship, Toyo Tyres Pre-2005 Production Touring Car Championship, Burton Power Products Blue Oval Saloon Series and the Edmundson Electrical Classic Thunder Saloons Championship will undoubtedly set pulses racing.

Nostalgic tin top thrills will also come in the shape of the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship over the course of the weekend as well, with two breathtaking encounters scheduled to take place.

The Sports Prototype Cup’s sophomore season has been nothing short of sensational thus far and the good times are set to keeping come as the prototype category continues. Alongside the usual runners and riders, one notable addition to the entry list is former Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy – who will be making his debut.

Rounding out the action at Snetterton will be high-octane races from the Mini 7 Racing Club. Last month, the Se7en and Miglia categories took on a starring role alongside the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship.

BARC publishes COVID-19 guidelines for Competitors and Officials

With the restart to racing in the UK now well underway the British Automobile Racing Club has updated its guidelines on how events will be run for both Competitors and Officials.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to adjust some of our practices and procedures in order to satisfy the requirements laid down by the government and most importantly to provide the safest environment possible for everyone involved.

In line with the guidance provided by Motorsport UK, the BARC will operate their race meetings as follows:-

These guidelines have been put in place with the well-being of staff, competitors, officials and all potential visitors to our venues and events remaining at the forefront of our considerations at all times.

As it stands, all race meetings and events remain provisional and subject to change in accordance with the latest directives from the UK government.

BARC serves up titanic two days of track action at Donington Park

Donington Park played host to a memorable two days of British Automobile Racing Club action this past weekend (August 22/23) which saw mixed conditions only add to the edge-of-the-seat drama and entertainment.

Descending on the Leicestershire venue for what would turn out to be a weekend to remember, a total of seven championships hit the track and turned on the style for the enthusiastic crowd that was in attendance.

One of the headline acts was the BTRA British Truck Racing Championship and the 1000bhp heavyweight behemoths didn’t disappoint as they served up a feast of thrills and spills across five bruising encounters.

Division 1 saw four-time defending champion Ryan Smith begin his quest for a fifth crown in emphatic fashion on the right foot as he powered his way to a brace of rain wins. Martin Gibson, David Jenkins and John Newell also triumphed, underlining that the class is set to be as wide open as ever in 2020.

Steven Powell enjoyed a solid start in Division 2 as he kicked off his quest for the title in emphatic fashion, winning four out of the five races. The MAN TGX driver was in a league of his own at times and would have completed a clean sweep had it not been for Luke Garrett scoring a win of his own.

Another category to lift the curtain on its condensed 2020 season was the Distrigo C1 Challenge, taking centre stage on Saturday for a three-hour spectacle which ended with the top two being separated by little over half a second.

The Progressive Motorsport Ltd duo of Howard Hayens and Dave Ward narrowly edged out Team Davies after a sensational 91 laps around the 1.98-mile track.

The Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres saw three drivers take home a share of the silverware following six breathless races. Saturday’s triple-header saw Daniel Clark, Will Gibson and Connor Mills take a win each before Gibson and Mill triumphed again on Sunday, the latter a brace.

There was action aplenty in the Max5 Racing Championship over the course of the weekend too as the one-make series starred. Andrew Pretorius reigned supreme in the opening encounter before Paul Roddison scooped the spoils in race two.

The BARC North West Centre’s flagship category, the CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship, made its second appearance of the year with Richard Wood and Luke Armiger taking a win apiece under the flightpath of East Midlands airport.

Rounding out the weekend’s track action at Donington Park were races from both the BRSCC Mazda MX5 Championship and BRSCC Mazda MX5 Supercup.

BARC revved up for blockbuster weekend at Donington Park

The British Automobile Racing Club is preparing for a blockbuster two days of track action at Donington Park this weekend (August 22/23) with six championships, including the BTRA Truck Racing Championship, set to take centre stage.

In what is always a well-attended event on the national motorsport calendar, the Leicestershire venue will welcome a limited number of spectators to watch a feast of entertainment around the challenging 1.95-mile circuit.

Headlining the weekend’s action will be the five-tonne heavyweight behemoths of the BTRA. Kick-starting their 2020 campaign under the flightpath of East Midlands airport, a bumper grid of trucks will take centre stage with five races scheduled to play out.

Headlining Division 1 is four-time reigning champion Ryan Smith who is chasing a fifth consecutive title. Having been the man to beat in recent years, Smith enters the weekend as the favourite but with the likes of David Jenkins, Stuart Oliver and Simon Reid, amongst others, nothing is guaranteed.

In Division 2, Luke Garrett begins the pursuit of a third successive title and the MAN driver, like Smith, enters the weekend with a target on his back and with Steven Powell, Brad Smith and Simon Cole on the hunt, Garrett will need to be at his brilliant best.

Just over a month since their reschedule season got underway, the Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres resumes with its usual blend of wheel-to-wheel, bumper-to-bumper entertainment putting fans on the edge of their seats.

Jack Parker, Miles Rudman, Sy Harraway, John Mickel and Daniel Clark were the early pace-setters at Croft and they will all be worth keeping an eye on, as well as a host of others, across the weekend’s six races.

The Max5 Racing Championship was another category to blast into life at Croft and with grid numbers continuing to rise, the single-make series is building toward a memorable 2020 season.

Jon Halliwell made a triumphant return to the championship last time out and marked it with a double win. Paul Roddison, Sam Hicks, Ian Loversidge, Jeremy Shipley and Andrew Pretorius are just a few of the drivers that will be keen to make their mark during the weekends two encounters.

The Club’s North West Centre will be present over the course of the weekend in the shape of the CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship. Running under a multi-class format, the much-loved category began its year at Cadwell Park with Paul Rose and Paul Dobson claiming a win apiece.

Expect those two to be at the sharp end of a grid which has all the hallmarks of encompassing the quote ‘variety is the spice of life’.

Another category that will be making their first appearance of this condensed 2020 season is the C1 Challenge. Providing a low-cost method of going endurance racing, the series has emerged as one of the fastest growing categories in the country since launching midway through 2017.

Armed with a capacity entry list and a three-hour race scheduled to take place on the Saturday, the action is set to be unmissable.

Bringing the curtain down on the track action at Donington Park will be action from the BRSCC Mazda Mx5 Supercup.

BARC championships serve up scorching weekend of racing at Croft

The British Automobile Racing Club’s second race meeting in as many weeks since UK motorsport restarted proved to be a resounding smash-hit this past weekend (July 11/12), as six championships served up a feast of entertainment at Croft.

As the sun beamed down on the North Yorkshire venue across both days, competitors and officials continued to adjust to the ‘new normal’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic; with temperature checks, wearing of face masks and social distancing all being carried out.

Spoils were shared in the opening two rounds of the Dunlop Endurance Championship as a bumper entry list took centre stage around the challenging 2.1-mile circuit.

Race one saw the RAW Motorsport pairing of Steve Burgess and Ben Dimmack power their Radical RXC Coupe to the chequered flag before VR Motorsport’s Danny Harrison did the same in race two at the wheel of his Praga R1T.

The Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres delivered six spellbinding encounters and produced three deserving winners.

Saturday’s action saw Jack Parker take an impressive brace before Sy Harraway closed out proceedings with a win of his own. On Sunday, defending champion Miles Rudman opened his account for the season before Harraway returned to winning ways once again, netting another two victories.

Lewis Saunders maintained his advantage at the summit of the Junior Saloon Car Championship as he bagged another pair of wins. The former champion swept the opposition in the opener before narrowly edging out Charlie Hand in race two to maintain his perfect record.

The Mighty Minis Championship saw a dominant double-winning display produced as well as Neven Kirkpatrick reigned supreme to kick-start his 2020 campaign in fine style; getting the better of Ian Clark and Steven Rideout in both races.

Jon Halliwell completed a fairytale comeback in the Max5 Racing Championship as he also claimed a sensational two wins. Having watched from the sidelines for a few years, Halliwell was back behind the wheel and back at the front to lead Paul Roddison home.

Rounding out the weekend were a trio of races from the Caterham Graduates Championship, which boasted a bumper entry list throughout each of its classes that added up to an impressive 34-car starting grid.

Henry Heaton proved to be the driver to beat throughout the weekend however as he was perfection personified, taking victory in all three races and by some margin as well.

Croft set to play host to bumper BARC weekend

The British Automobile Racing Club speeds into North Yorkshire this weekend (July 11/12) with six championships all set to take centre stage at Croft Circuit.

One week on from what proved to be a hugely successful season-opener at Cadwell Park for the Club since lockdown restrictions were eased, a total of 17 races are set to take place around the challenging 2.1-mile circuit across both days – with edge-of-the-seat entertainment guaranteed.

Having taken on a starring role last weekend, the Junior Saloon Car Championship is back in action with another bumper entry list of talented 14 to 17-year-old’s and two high-octane encounters scheduled to be run.

After notching two wins at Cadwell Park, all eyes will be on former champion Lewis Saunders as he bids to extend his early points lead over the rest of the field. Leading the chase for the Mac Tools-backed ace will be the likes of Charlie Hand, Ben Greenhill and Ruben Hage, amongst others.

Kickstarting their campaign at Croft will be the Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres. Small in stature but packing a real punch under the bonnet, these 5/8 scale machines are renowned for producing breathtaking wheel-to-wheel moments.

Miles Rudman returns as defending champion but the threats to his throne come from all angles, with multiple title winner John Mickel, Connor Mills and Sy Harraway set to be the lead protagonists across the weekend’s six races.

The Dunlop Endurance Championship boasts a coveted entry list too with all manner of jaw-dropping machines revved up to launch their season with a pair of 50-minute spectacles.

Elsewhere, the Caterham Graduates Championship has continued on its upward trajectory of recent years and with a blend of experienced and new drivers, it is set to be quite the display on-track.

This weekend will also mark the start of a new season for the Max5 Racing Championship, which looks set to showcase one of its biggest grids in some time.

Paul Roddison has proven to be the driver to beat in recent years in the one-make series however the return of Jon Halliwell could well make it an intriguing weekend for the formidable race-winner.

Rounding off what is set to be a blockbuster weekend’s action at Croft will be races from the Mighty Minis Championship, with the usual thrills and spills likely to be delivered.

BARC announces revised provisional 2020 calendar for remainder of the year

The British Automobile Racing Club can today (June 22) reveal its revised provisional calendar for the remainder 2020; kicking off on July 4/5 and running right the way through until November 22.

Following on from the suspension of UK motorsport in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Club has worked tirelessly to put together a calendar with the dates available that will suit each individual championship.

Unfortunately, both the British Hillclimb Championship and BARC Connaught Speed Championship have elected to cancel their 2020 campaigns, with the focus now on 2021.

All dates remain provisional and subject to change in line with the current and ever-evolving government guidelines. Spectators are currently not permitted to attend events at this moment in time.

Phil Cooper leads list of special award winners at BARC Championship Awards Evening

Legends Cars National Championship Co-ordinator Phil Cooper was the headline recipient of the special awards that were handed out at the BARC’s annual Championship Awards Evening this past Saturday (February 8th). 

Whilst champions of 2019 took centre stage during the evening, a handful of secret awards were presented to unsuspecting winners at the end of the night.

Cooper emerged as one of those victors as he was honoured for his role in the Legends Cars National Championship over the past 25 years. After ending a career in the music business, Cooper brought the series to the UK and has been at the helm whilst it has flourished ever since.

Picking up The Gerry Marshall Trophy, Cooper fitted the bill in sharing the same eagerness and philosophy for motorsport that Gerry once did.

“That was quite the surprise, I had no idea,” Cooper said. “I’ve been invited to this event for a number of years and don’t always attend but the team at the BARC were rather quite insistent I attend as Miles was coming and his car was on display as well.

“I thought I would be handing over Miles’ award so when that didn’t happen I thought that was it. Then Alan Hyde read my name out and it was just complete shock. I’m very grateful and thankful for receiving this accolade.

“Last year was the 25th Anniversary of the Legends Cars National Championship and I’m very proud of what we have been able to achieve. When I finished working in the music business I thought that I might potter around in motor racing for a little while but here we still are.”

After powering his way to the Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship crown last year, James Hedley was a worthy winner of The Peter Collins Trophy.

Awarded to the most promising newcomer competing in a BARC championship, the teenage sensation produced a superlative performance to become the latest champion of the much-loved TOCA series.

Commenting on accolade, Hedley said: “I was quite shocked when Alan Hyde read out my name, I didn’t know too much about the award. Now that I’ve been able to look through all of the names on the trophy and all of the previous winners I’m truly honoured.

“I’ve been up against some really tough, naturally talented drivers so it is nice to see that people are recognising all of the hard work that is being put together. This whole evening has been fantastic and this award will be one I’ll treasure for a long time.”

Garrie Whittaker’s unbeaten season in the Kumho BMW Championship didn’t go unnoticed either as he scooped The Presidents Cup.

Bestowed upon the most successful driver competing under international level within the BARC, Whittaker added his name to the famous trophy once again after previously winning it. His 20-race clean sweep made him the standout contender for the coveted trophy.

“I’m not usually lost for words but winning The Presidents Cup for a third time has pretty much left me speechless,” Whittaker said following the prize giving.

“I’ve won it twice before and I knew that I had had a good year but you never really expect to be awarded, not least for a third time. Picking up my championship trophy from Colin [Turkington] was really great however this accolade is something I’m really proud of.

“To be handed an award that people have decided you deserve based on your performances over the course of the season is just the icing on the cake.”

Elsewhere, Pam and Steve Green were handed the Sir Clive Bossom Trophy after completing the most volunteering days over the course of the season.

Nick Allison meanwhile picked up the BARC Marshal of the Year for a second time.

Champions, marshals and officials are set to be honoured at the British Automobile Racing Club’s annual Championship Awards Evening on Saturday 8th February 2020, with the Chesford Grange Hotel in Kenilworth confirmed to once again host the prestigious event.

Celebrating the 2019 season in fine style, race suits and overalls will be swapped for black ties and ball gowns as the great and good of UK motorsport come together for what should be another unforgettable night.

Whilst those who emerged victorious from their respective categories over the course of the season will take centre stage, several other ‘secret’ awards will be handed out during the evening as well – adding further excitement to the spectacle.

Hosted by Alan Hyde, the star-studded evening is set to include a three-course dinner and raffle in addition to the customary trophy presentation. Entertainment will come in the shape of popular cover band ‘The Torn Off Strips’.

BARC championships deliver show-stopping weekend at Brands Hatch

The British Automobile Racing Club took centre stage at Brands Hatch this past weekend (November 2/3) as five championships battled contrasting conditions to bring the curtain down on their 2019 campaigns.

As champions were crowned in front of a bumper crowd around the famous Kent venue, fireworks flew both on and off the track across a sensational two days of scintillating entertainment.

One of the headline acts of the weekend proved to the MV Commercial BTRA Championship, which served up no less than eight spellbinding encounters.

In Division 1, Ryan Smith secured a fourth successive title as he converted his healthy points advantage over David Jenkins into an unassailable lead.

Storming to pole position, the MAN driver was victorious in race one before then going on to finish in fourth in race two – which was enough to wrap up the title. Jamie Anderson meanwhile proved to be unstoppable on Sunday as he scorched his way to a hat-trick of race wins.

Steven Powell made home advantage count in Division 2 as he powered his way to a hat-trick of race wins. Cementing his status as vice-champion, Powell was in a league of his own for a majority of the weekend whilst John Bowler rounded off the year on the top step of the podium.

Producing plenty of thrills and spills, the Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres brought its 25th Anniversary campaign to a close in sensational style – with Miles Rudman being crowned champion for the first-ever time.

Entering the finale holding a significant points lead, Rudman made no mistake to get the job done; winning Saturday and Sunday’s finals in show-stopping fashion. Connor Mills, Paul Simmons, Jack Parker and John Mickel also tasted victory across both days too.

Scott McIntyre was another driver to savour the spoils of victory over the course of the weekend as he captured the Junior Saloon Car Championship title.

With double points on offer, a second place finish behind outgoing champion Lewis Saunders in the opening encounter was enough for the 2018 Scholarship victor to secure the championship. Saunders would reign supreme in the final race of the season too.

The Pickup Truck Racing Championship crowned a brand-new champion in the shape of George Turiccki at Brands Hatch, with three blockbuster encounters captivating those in attendance.

Michael Smith, the returning Lea Wood and Declan Jones shared the spoils but nobody could stop Turiccki from capturing his first championship in the series.

Despite 2019 champion Malcolm Blackman electing to miss the season finale, the Super Silhouette Championship was in fine form too during the weekend with Danny Hunn and Lewis Smith signing off with a win apiece.

Fireworks to fly at Brands Hatch as BARC championships gear up to sign off 2019 season

Fireworks are set to fly both on and off the track at Brands Hatch this weekend (November 2/3) as the British Automobile Racing Club descends on the Kent venue with four championships set to bring the curtain down on their 2019 campaigns in spectacular fashion.

One of the headline events of the season, an awe-inspiring fireworks display on Sunday evening will be proceeded by a feast of on-track action from the MV Commercial BTRA Championship, Junior Saloon Car Championship, Pickup Truck Racing Championship and Super Silhouette Championship.

Weighing in at more than five tonnes and producing in excess of 1000bhp, the MV Commercial BTRA Championship will arguably take centre stage with eight blockbuster races.

In Division 1, Ryan Smith and David Jenkins will conclude their battle for the coveted crown. Bidding to clinch a four consecutive title, Smith finds himself in the box seat at the head of the standings however Jenkins can’t be discounted from overhauling the MAN racer.

Luke Garrett can rest easy after wrapping up the Division 2 title at Pembrey last time out however there is still plenty to race for. A five-way battle for second place remains keenly fought over so a watchful eye should be cast on Steven Powell, Brad Smith, Paul Rivett, John Bowler and John Powell.

Meanwhile, Miles Rudman sits on the cusp of a maiden Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres title as he heads a 30-strong entry list into the final event of what has been a momentous 25th Anniversary campaign for the popular pocket rockets.

Holding a substantial lead over his rivals, the former rookie champion will be keen to convert his advantage into championship silverware and with six races in which to do so, he has plenty of opportunities.

Rudman will have to wary of the likes of John Mickel, Sean Smith, Sy Harraway, Marcus Pett, Will Gibson and many more, all of whom will be undoubtedly in the mix to challenge towards the sharp end of the grid.

The destiny of the Junior Saloon Car Championship will be decided at Brands Hatch too, with three drivers in the mix and double points on offer. Showcasing themselves as the next generation of UK motorsport stars, the JSCC contingent will undoubtedly put on a show to remember.

Scott McIntyre, who at times has been in a league of his own, holds a 54-point advantage at the standings summit and looks on course to convert his lead into title glory. Both Alex Jay and reigning champion Lewis Saunders are the only two drivers to stand in McIntyre’s way.

A first-ever Pickup Truck Racing Championship is within touching distance of George Turiccki, however it isn’t job done just yet. Having been the epitome of consistency, tallying five wins along the way, Turiccki sits on the cusp of glory but he will need to be wary of the chasing pack.

Dale Gent and Michael Smith are the closest rivals to Turiccki as it stands but both will need fortune to fall their way if they are to complete a remarkable comeback.

Only the BARC Super Silhouette Championship is the only category to be settled heading into the weekend, with Malcolm Blackman having attained an unassailable lead last time out.

Having flourished under the stewardship of Sonny Howard, the spaceframe series has scaled new heights this year and a bumper entry list will round out what has been another superlative season of wheel-to-wheel action.

Blockbuster BARC action takes centre stage at Pembrey Autumn Truckfest

The British Automobile Racing Club served up a five-star performance at Pembrey Circuit this past weekend (October 5/6) for what proved to be a blockbuster two days of racing, headlined by the MV Commercial BTRA Championship.

On what was one the Welsh venue’s final events of the 2019 season, a bumper crowd descended on the picturesque circuit to witness a feast of on-track entertainment in contrasting conditions.

Having taken centre stage back in May, the penultimate event of the MV Commercial BTRA Championship had everyone on the edge-of-their-seats as the battle for supremacy in both Division 1 and Division 2 continued.

Ryan Smith took a step closer to a fourth successive Division 1 title as he powered his MAN TGA to a hat-trick of race wins, strengthening his position at the summit of the standings. John Newell would claim outright honours in the remaining encounter, tallying his first win of the year.

Division 2 would see the spoils shared between four drivers however nobody could stop Luke Garrett from securing an unassailable lead in the championship to become a back-to-back champion.

Along with Paul Rivett, John Bowler and Brad Smith, Garrett stood on the top step of the podium over the course of the weekend to be crowned 2019 champion with one round still to spare.

From the heavyweight behemoths of the BTRA to the pocket rockets of the Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres, the non-stop adrenaline-fuelled racing didn’t stop as the weekend wore on.

Miles Rudman put himself within touching distance of a maiden title as he clinched a pair of race wins whilst Sy Harraway also starred, taking a double of his own around the challenging 1.49-mile layout.

Both Will Gibson and Jack Parker chalked up victories too on what proved to be a pivotal weekend for the 5/8 scale machines.

The curtain fell in emphatic style on the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship season, with two high-octane races. Williams Sharpe reigned supreme in the opening encounter at the wheel of his MG ZR before Mark Baker prevailed in race two.

Mark Harrison was the driver to beat in the weekend’s two Monoposto Teideman Trophy, with Chris Everill doing the same in the Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championship.
